Almost everyone knows what a tennis bracelet is, but very few know why they are called “tennis” bracelets.
In fact, before a certain snappy event, it was the eternity bracelet, an elegant piece of wrist jewelry consisting of a single strand of small diamonds set in a precious metal chain.
But then, in the 1978 US Tennis Open, the unexpected happened.
Chris Evert, one of the most stylish players in tennis history and 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, is battling the US Open quarter-final match and wearing a beautiful eternity diamond bracelet.
Chris’ bracelet snaps and dramatically flyes away.
A timeout is granted, Chris finds her bracelet, eventually loses the match, and founds a new tradition, the tennis bracelet.
Many tennis bracelets nowadays include a safety chain along with the clasp, since a clasp failure was the cause for Chris’ bracelet event.
So now you are in the know and have fresh stuff for cocktail party conversation.
